Blood Type Diet

The basis to the Blood Type Diet depends on which A/B/O blood type you are. This then determines which foods are likely to cause positive or adverse effects in the body.

Red blood cells have proteins called antigens on their surface and these differ depending on their blood type. The different antigens found on the surface of red blood cells determine which antibodies circulate in the blood.

Each different blood type has opposing antibodies to those antigens found on the red blood cell surface, to avoid an immune reaction occurring between the blood antibodies and red blood cell antigens.

For example Blood type A has antigen ‘A” on the surface of red blood cells. The antibody circulating in the blood is ‘B’ antibody. Look at the following table.

Blood Type
Red Blood Antigen
Antibodies in blood
A

B

From this table you can understand why blood type A can not receive a blood transfusion from blood type B.

The Blood Type Diet is based on the concept that foods have proteins attached to them called lectins that act as antigens. Some lectins on food are similar to the antigens found on red blood cells and depending on your blood type may therefore react in the body and render themselves harmful.

BENEFITS OF THE BLOOD TYPE DIET

In Peter D’Adamo’s ‘The Eat Right Diet’ he states that by following your blood type plan you can:

  • Avoid many common viruses and infections
  • Lose weight
  • Fight against life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver failure.
  • Avoid factors that cause cellular breakdown, and therefore slow the aging process.

(From The Eat Right Diet, 1998, p.37.)

FOODS FOR THE BLOOD TYPE DIET

For each blood type foods are grouped into ‘beneficial’, ‘neutral’ and ‘harmful’.
  • Beneficial foods act as medicines
  • Neutral foods act as foods
  • Harmful foods act as poisons

For more information and complete food lists purchase and read “Eat Right For Your Blood Type” by Peter D’Adamo
